Traditional library collections have not typically included zines, but zine collections in libraries are becoming more common. Zines can be crucial information resources for communities as well as valuable primary sources in learning and research. Cataloging zines can prove challenging because they defy conventional means of publication. In Zine Cataloging : A Guide for Libraries and Independent Collections, Barton and Fox draw on their experience to provide practical guidance for cataloging zines in academic and public library contexts (using MARC, RDA, LCSH, etc.) and in independent library contexts. Additionally, the authors speak to special considerations for zine cataloging that address privacy concerns for zine creators and ethical factors that should be weighed when making zines accessible and discoverable in library collections.

Joshua Barton is the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services and Assistant Head of Technical Services at Michigan State University Libraries. He has his MSI from the University of Michigan School of Information and a BA also from the University of Michigan. Joshua began at MSU as a serials cataloger, which initiated his work with zines. This evolved into broader advocacy for zine collections at MSU and beyond, including work with the American Library Association’s Zine Pavilion and two years organizing the Mid-Michigan Zine Fair. Joshua also works in the area of library linked data and serves as MSU’s representative to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s CONSER program.

Violet Fox is the Metadata Librarian at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University in Saint Joseph, Minnesota. She completed her MLIS at the University of Washington iSchool in June 2013 and her undergraduate degree at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Violet began her love affair with classification during her time as the Dewey Decimal Classification Intern at the Library of Congress in 2012 and 2013, working with the editors of the Dewey Decimal system to improve subject access for librarians. In 2014 Violet became the News Editor for Cataloging and Classification Quarterly. Recent research interests have included the ethical implications of classification and the future of cataloging in a Linked Data environment. In her spare time, Violet volunteers as an organizer for the Twin Cities Zine Fest and works with the Zine Librarians Interest Group.
